Mendenhall Glacier

Mendenhall Glacier is the most easily accessible glacier in Alaska.  We took a cheap shuttle from the pier out to the site.  It's only 12 miles (19km) from Juneau.

When chunks of ice fall off a glacier, it's called "calving."

Anyone want to go for a swim?

My apologies to all birding friends.  I don't know what kind of birds were nesting here and I didn't get any pictures.  (Bad bird blogger.....but I'll make up for it later.)

This amazing waterfall was pouring in to the lake.  Everything in Alaska is huge and there are not many frames of reference to gauge true size.

See the ants as we get closer to the falls?  Those are people!  Too much water was spraying off at the bottom to get a closer shot.  I didn't want to drench my camera.

Oh, look, my favorite tourists!

I've never seen a glacier in person. One more reason to visit Alaska. I'm so loving your trip.

All of these wonderful posts bring back memories of our two Alaska cruises. We took a gentle raft trip down the Mendenhall River, very peaceful and quiet.

Interesting to see the little calved ice chunks.
Did the girls beg to go swimming? Hmm, maybe not.
