Portage Glacier

From Whittier to Anchorage the road follows a place called Turn Again Arm.  It was very scenic but somehow I managed not to get any pictures of it when we traveled through.  I took some after we backtracked later in the week.

After our orientation to the RV in Anchorage we loaded up on groceries at Elmendorf Air Force Base.  My husband served 28 years in the Indian Health Service, a branch of the US Public Health Service, so we have retired military benefits.  Shopping at the commissary saved us a bunch of money.

Just as a side note, my dad served in the Air Force and flew bombing missions during WWII.  He wrote his memoirs and published his own book, Memoirs of a Marauder Pilot.  He is still alive and well and coming to visit us in July!  His dad served in the Army and my mother's dad was an admiral in the Navy.

We were anxious to spend the night somewhere nice and we did.  We went to Portage Glacier Campground in the Chugach National Forest.  Because we arrived before Memorial Day, the campground was very quiet, virtually empty really.

There was a late snow in April that was lingering on all the mountains in SE Alaska when we arrived in May.  Apparently it dumped a lot of snow.

We got up early and hiked to the Visitor's Center but it was still closed.
