California Dreaming

"All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey
I've been for a walk on a winters day

I'd be safe and warm if I was in LA
california dreaming on such a winters day"

This is a rare picture-less blog.  I'm still waiting for my pictures to arrive from California.  My sister downloaded them off her computer after I loaded them on her computer while I was there.  I appreciate the helpful comments, but I guess I need to clarify.  It was the memory card in my camera that quit on me.  The computer didn't automatically erase the pictures after downloading.  I didn't choose the option.  I am wondering if I pulled the USB plug before I turned off the camera and if that would ruin the card (what I called the chip.)  I didn't run my camera through checked baggage.  My friend Nancy did that and TSA broke her camera!  Someone else had their camera stolen!  I carry my equipment in a backpack with me.

I did put the card back in the camera and tried formatting it again, but it just registered busy.  Before that the camera said it could not read the card.  Before that the computer said it couldn't read the card either.  My niece had half of her wedding pictures disappear when her photographer's card went "bad."

What I've been wondering, and haven't googled, is what is it in a card that goes bad?  What is even in one of those things that records the electrons that make such pretty pictures that we all seem to be so fond of viewing and posting?

I have no idea, but I can imagine how horrendously frustrating that must be. Hopefully it might have a lazarus like moment!

Sometimes if you hold the card with one hand and notice the little brass end pieces. Take some moisture from your mouth or water and wipe the brass strips off. Moisture sometimes makes the connection between the strips and the camera work or connect better.

Well I'm sorry Loran. I'm just glad that your sister got all of your pictures BEFORE you lost everything. I know that I have to 'eject' the camera from the computer to keep from having 'damage'... So--maybe that was it.

I don't know how long those memory cards are supposed to last. You might talk to someone at a camera store. Was yours old --and had it been used over and over???? I've just never heard of such a thing --but who knows when it comes to electronics....

Sorry your weather is so lousy right now... It's hard to go into winter after a beautiful fall.

Hugs,
Betsy

Memory cards are a mystery to me. For that matter, the digital world is a mystery. Perhaps I should call it a miracle - when it works!
Hope you figure out the card, or at least get the photos in the mail from CA.

I had a bad card that works just fine in my daughter's camera. I appreciate the insights you have received here. I will keep them in mind. Good luck!
